This is reflected by our large enrollment of international students representing more than 100 countries and 65 languages.

Language Instruction

The Brookhaven College World Languages Division offers language courses for anyone who wishes to learn a different language. “Foreign” languages, both ancient and modern, are offered in addition to programs in English such as American Sign Language and English for Speakers of Other Languages.

English for Speakers of Other Languages: More about ESOL Courses

The ESOL credit curriculum is designed to develop a student’s pre-academic language proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The plan of study consists of 16 courses divided into four proficiency levels and four skill areas: listening-speaking, reading, writing and grammar. The credit curriculum is designed to interface both with other ESOL programs and with developmental studies or college-level programs on each Dallas County Community College campus. A student enters this program by taking an English placement test and then by being placed in courses by a specially trained academic advisor through the Multicultural Center in the Student Services Center, Buildng S.

Intensive English Program: More about IEP Courses

Official Sponsor of IIE's Intensive English USAThis program is uniquely for international students on F-1 Visas, commonly referred to as I-20s, who need to improve their English skills before taking college-level courses. The 17-hour per semester Intensive English Program, IEP, includes courses in reading, conversation, writing, grammar skills and American culture. Class discussions are reinforced by language lab work and computer exercises. Courses are focused toward developing academic English language proficiency as preparation to enter college-credit courses. The curriculum includes all of the courses listed in the ESOL program described above plus special courses to familiarize students with American culture.
