BROOKHAVEN NURSING PROGRAM INFORMATION.
Nursing is a highly specialized profession that is valued and respected in the community. Research indicates that nurses are trusted more than any other professional! Brookhaven College is seeking the most qualified applicants for admission to its program. The faculty members believe that the admission process and requirements provide the foundation for preparing students to be successful in this program.
Brookhaven College’s Associate Degree Nursing Program is a 72-credit hour, five semester (including summer) block curriculum leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree. Upon successful graduation, the graduate is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, commonly referred to as the NCLEX-RN.
Our program began in Fall, 2004 and has exceptional outcomes with high retention rates and excellent nursing board scores.
The Brookhaven College Associate Degree Nursing Program will be offered in its entirety at Mountain View College beginning spring 2008. Upon completion of the Nursing Program, Mountain View College nursing students will receive their degree from Brookhaven College.
The Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission and the Texas Board of Nursing. We are proud of our program and hope that you will apply.
The Brookhaven College Nursing Program accepts approximately 40 students, fall and spring of each year. The Mountain View College site accepts approximately 40 students once per year.
Acceptance to the Associate Degree Nursing Program is based on a point system.
The points are derived from:
Students are then ranked and admitted based on highest points *.
*Applicants who previously applied and met admission requirements, but were not accepted will be given a one time addition of three points for the subsequent period .
Incomplete application packets will not be considered for any application period.
The information found on this Web site contains the Associate Degree Nursing Program application guidelines and requirements. By submitting an application packet, an individual verifies that he/she has read the Web site and the packet and understands the policies and procedures for application and conditions for acceptance into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
2009 information sessions will be held at both campuses and interested applicants are encouraged to attend a Nursing Program information session. The session is not mandatory for admission to the program.

More information is available at www.hesitest.com. The HESI A2™ Test can only be taken once during each application period; only the most current score will be used for calculating points for admission.
The HESI A2TM form is needed to test; obtain the form from this link: HESI A2TM informational form (PDF). Follow the procedure as listed on the form. The test costs $25.
HESI A2™ testing is scheduled at Brookhaven and Mountain View colleges from Sept. 2-23 at the following times:
Monday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
In order to graduate from the Brookhaven College nursing program, all students MUST take and pass the HESI exam with a minimum score of 850. This exam is offered in the last course (RNSG 1443). If a student fails the exit Hesi exam on initial administration, the student will receive a “W”. The student will schedule a retest within 30 days.
If the student passes the HESI on second attempt, they will be awarded the course grade earned.
If student fails the HESI a second time, the "W" will remain. The student will be required to repeat RNSG 1443 and RNSG 2461. A prescriptive contract based on HESI results will be developed for the individual student.
Students need to schedule an appointment with an advisor, especially if you have previous courses reviewed to establish whether more courses must be taken prior to applying to the Nursing Program or to check TSI/TASP, GPA, and Reading and Math ACCUPLACER TM status, please contact the Brookhaven College or Mountain View College Advising and Counseling Center.
Beginning Fall 2009, students will no longer be allowed to substitute pharmacology courses without specific nursing implications and nursing components. It cannot be a general pharmacology class. Course work from transfer nursing students requesting admission will be evaluated individually.
Note: When repeating a course for a better grade, the Grade Point Average (GPA) will only be calculated on the last same course number attempted.

Brookhaven College’s Nursing Program is a block curriculum pattern and courses from integrated nursing curricula are not transferred easily.
Students should contact the Brookhaven or Mountain View Admissions Office to begin admission to the college where they wish to transfer. Once approved for admission, students will need to contact the dean of nursing at Brookhaven College for either campus request. Students MUST provide all college transcripts and course descriptions requesting to be transferred and accreditation status of each institution attended. Please allow up to three weeks processing time.
Any student requesting readmission or transfer, must make an appointment with Professor Justine Schmitt, Readmissions Committee Chair, to discuss his or her request.
In order to transfer into the Nursing Program, space must be available in the course and the student’s course work and application must be evaluated to determine if the student is eligible. Students are not automatically accepted and transfer depends on space availability.
Transferring students must meet all requirements for admission into the program. A letter is required from the dean of nursing where the student is transferring from stating that the student is in “good standing and is eligible for readmission.” Please send the letter directly to Dr. Mark Meyer, dean of nursing, Brookhaven College.
Any student who has been in the Brookhaven College/Mountain View College Nursing Program must apply through the readmission process and is not eligible for application as a new student. Readmission of Brookhaven or Mountain View students who want to reapply will be based on individual requests and space availability.
Failure of a nursing course can affect progression because of prerequisite requirements and the sequencing. If a student fails RNSG 1441/RNSG 2360 (med surg common concepts and clinical); the student must request to be readmitted into the nursing program and if readmitted; student may only enroll in RNSG 2213/RNSG 1160 (mental health nursing) if space available prior to repeating RNSG 1441/RNSG 2360. Refer to readmission criteria regarding GPA etc.
The following information explains other requirements and expectations of the Nursing Program.
Students accepted into the Brookhaven College or Mountain View Nursing Program are required by the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council member facilities to undergo a criminal background check and drug testing prior to beginning their clinical experience.
These procedures are conducted after a student has been accepted to the Nursing Program. Results of these screenings are forwarded to the dean of nursing at Brookhaven College for review and verification that a student is eligible to attend a clinical rotation. Students are responsible for all charges incurred.
The cost is approximately $85 for both of these screenings and is subject to change.
NOTE: Should a student who has been accepted to the Brookhaven College Nursing Program be prohibited from attending a clinical rotation experience due to findings of a criminal-background check and/or drug screening, the student may be dismissed from the Brookhaven College Nursing Program.
A clinical agency reserves the right to remove a student from the facility for suspicion of drug or alcohol use. The clinical agency reserves the right to request that a student submit to a repeat drug screening at the student’s expense on the same day that the student is removed from the clinical facility.
Failure to comply will result in the student’s immediate expulsion from the clinical facility.
Furthermore, regardless of testing or testing results, clinical agencies reserve the right to expel students from their facilities.
The drug screen follows National Institute on Drug Abuse guidelines and screens for 10 substances, as designated in the Substance Abuse Panel 10, “SAP 10.”
These substances are: amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine metabolites, marijuana metabolites, methadone, opiates, phencyclidine, and propoxyphene.
SAP 10 test results that fall outside of any of the acceptable ranges are considered positive test results and are automatically sent for a separate confirmatory test by a gas chromotography mass spectrometry method. If these results are positive, the test results are sent to a medical review officer who will review the results at an additional cost of $25-75 to the student. The medical review officer will then contact the student to determine if there is a valid prescription for the drug in question. If a valid prescription exists and is verified, the test result will be deemed negative and acceptable.
An individual with a positive drug screen will not be allowed to enroll in any nursing courses for a minimum of 12 months. If an individual is drug tested while in the nursing program, they will not be allowed to attend any clinical agency/rotation for a minimum of 12 months. Prior to enrolling or returning to the clinical agency/rotation, a student must provide proof of a negative drug screen as verified by the college/school.
The criminal-background check reviews a person’s criminal history at least seven years prior to the date of program application. The check will include all cities and counties of the person’s residency during that time period. The following histories will disqualify an individual from consideration for a clinical rotation:
Exception: If a licensing/registry body, e.g. the Texas Board of Nursing approves the individual to take the licensing/credentialing exam, the individual may participate in the clinical portion of the Nursing Program. (See Texas Board of Nursing information below)
However, even with approval from a licensing/registry body, each clinical facility reserves the right to deny access to a student with a criminal background or positive drug screen. In this event, a student may be dismissed from the Nursing Program.
The Texas Board of Nursing regulates the Brookhaven College associate degree program and the extension campus at Mountain View College.
Prior to graduation, students enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program are
responsible for providing the board with a legible set of fingerprint cards for the criminal-background process. The Board will not approve a nursing candidate to take the NCLEX-RN® examination or authorize the individual to practice as a graduate nurse without a valid criminal-background report. Individuals whose fingerprint cards are rejected by Texas Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation will be required to resubmit new sets of cards until a set that meets criteria for DPS/FBI is submitted and processed. The board cannot accept criminal-background reports that were originated or submitted though other organizations. All criminal background reports must be submitted through the BNE to DPS/FBI.”
Prior to admission to the Nursing Program, the student is required to meet the criteria for initial licensure eligibility. If any of the criteria apply, the student must submit a petition for Declaratory Order prior to entering the Nursing Program. A copy of the Declaratory Order is to be given to the Dean of Nursing prior to the application deadline. The Internet site to review and study the criteria is found at the following Web address: ftp://www.bon.state.tx.us/DOapp.pdf
All nursing students, once admitted, will be required to purchase professional liability insurance. Students cannot attend clinical without professional liability insurance. The cost will be announced in Success Camp and in class.
Clinical opportunities are not available for students without Social Security numbers. Once the student is admitted to the nursing program, students must immediately begin the process to obtain a U.S. Social Security. International students are advised to contact the Brookhaven College Multicultural Center, Building S, Room S136, or Mountain View College international advisor, Building W, Room 139, concerning this requirement.
Social Security status will be verified by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) prior to taking the N-CLEX exam. This number is also used by some hospitals in the Dallas Fort Worth Hospital District as identification to allow nursing students to chart on patient legal documents.
If you do not have a Social Security number by Success Camp week, you will be asked to withdraw.
Prior to beginning the Nursing Program, all students must be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly referred to as CPR, at the Healthcare Provider level as designated by the American Heart Association. A copy of a current CPR card MUST be submitted during Success Camp. Students must recertify each year they are in the program, regardless of whether their initial certification was effective for one or two years.
CPR courses are available through the Brookhaven College Workforce and Continuing Education Division and the Mountain View College Continuing Education Department. See the course schedule for details. CPR training also is available through the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, various hospitals and many other agencies.
All students in the Nursing Program are required to present proof of medical insurance. Please bring your insurance coverage information to Success Camp for verification. Insurance provider information is available on the Dallas County Community College District Web page: https://www1.dcccd.edu/catalog/ss/sd/insurance.cfm
If you have any questions, please contact the Nursing Program Office at Brookhaven or Mountain View colleges.
The Texas Department of State Health Services requires that all students enrolled in health professions programs who are exposed to blood and body fluid must have COMPLETED the Hepatitis B series prior to direct patient care. The series includes three injections and must be started PRIOR to your submitting your application to the Nursing Program because it requires a 4-6 month administration timeframe. The Hepatitis B series MUST be completed before beginning clinical rotations-NO EXCEPTIONS. Students without complete immunizations will be administratively dropped from the program.
The student is responsible for providing documentation of all immunizations to the nursing secretary.
Other REQUIRED proof of completed immunizations and tests include:
Documentation of a titer with specific lab values verifying immunity or seropositivity are also acceptable for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B and Varicella.
A current physical examination is needed for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program. The medical forms and immunization records include a medical history, physical exam and current, required immunizations. These forms are available in the nursing offices at Brookhaven and Mountain View colleges. The completed forms are submitted during Success Camp.
Once a student is accepted to the Nursing Program, all medical documents submitted will become property of the Nursing Program and will not be returned or photocopied for the student.
Sudden illnesses, pregnancy, injuries and other emergency medical conditions that prevent a student from attending clinical laboratory sessions will be handled by the dean of nursing. A signed statement regarding the condition may be required from a physician.
Students are responsible for their transportation arrangements to campus, field trips and to assigned health care facilities for clinical experience. Clinical assignments may vary from semester to semester or within the semester.
Students should contact the Scholarships/Financial Aid Office at Brookhaven College or Mountain View College for application forms, filing procedures and deadlines. A number of area hospitals offer financial assistance to students pursuing health care careers. For a listing of those hospitals with contact information, application procedures, etc., please contact the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council at 972-719-4900 to obtain their scholarship booklet.
The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, of 1990 was enacted by Congress to prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities. Schools of nursing, like other state- and federally-funded entities, are required to comply with the stipulations of the ADA. The ADA defines a qualified individual as an individual with a disability who, with or without reasonable accommodations, can perform the essential functions of the employment position that such individual holds or desires. In addition, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination in admissions of a qualified person with disabilities.
ADA and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 eligibility requirements vary depending on the type of services, activities and functions needed in particular areas. Because the practice of nursing is an applied discipline that uses cognitive, sensory, affective and psychomotor elements, students must be able to perform the functions that are necessary for the safe practice of nursing. Admission is based on a complete packet being submitted including signed course substitutions. A mathematical formula is used to compute the applicant’s score. After the application deadline, all applicant scores will be calculated. The applicants with the top scores will be identified.
The following factors determine the score:
Note: The HESI A2™ exam MUST be taken at Brookhaven College, Mountain View College, El Centro College or North Lake College. Students may retake the HESI A2 ™ during an admission cycle each year. The most CURRENT score will be used. HESI A2™TM scores are good for two years. Brookhaven College or Mountain View College will not mail scores to any other college.
Your grade point average, GPA, is calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted. Your grade point average may range from 0.0 to a 4.0.
For example:
A=4 grade points
B=3 grade points
C=2 grade points
I (Incompletes) and W (Withdrawals) do not receive grade points and do not have an effect on the GPA
