Front Desk Medical Office Assistant

DALLAS – Handling the busy and demanding front office for a medical office requires special skills and abilities. Brookhaven College is the first in the Dallas County Community College District to add a group of credit courses that are meant to prepare students for this career.

An award, recognizing the skills needed for medical front office, will begin this fall semester. The college added the program to meet a local need in the community and to meet student needs for this training. The medical office courses consist of Medical Terminology, Medical Office Procedures, Medical Software Applications, Medical Coding Basics and Medical Insurance.

The program was designed to improve the proficiency of those working in a medical office or prepare those with strong office skills for the medical environment. The training for medical front office staff can prepare medical office receptionists and secretaries to cross over into career hs that include coding or billing specialist, medical assistant, office manager or practice manager.

The five courses included in the series can be taken for credit as part of the Business Office Systems and Support program, as an individual program, or courses or to enhance an associate degree program. The courses also are available through the Workforce and Continuing Education Division, for students who are interested in workforce training. Both options have financial aid available for students.

Information sessions will provide opportunities for potential student to meet the faculty and learn the schedule, tuition and book costs, financial aid resources and potential career paths. For additional information, contact Sharon Burton at 972-860-4163; Pat Byars at 972-860-4170 in Business Office Systems and Support; or Susana Ruelas in Corporate and Continuing Education at 972-860-4775.
