TRANSCENDENTALISM: THE AMERICAN RENAISSANCEContemporary Americans owe much to the men and women who participated in the Transcendentalist movement that flourished for a few years near Concord, Massachusetts. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Transcendentalists advocated equal rights for women and the abolition of slavery. They practiced innovations in education of children. They advocated reform in established religions, practiced civil disobedience and brought the preservation of nature into public awareness. We'll explore the personalities and ideas that give the "American Renaissance" lasting importance in this lecture series. Oct. 2: Historical background and introduction of Ralph Waldo Emerson Oct. 9: The life and writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson Oct. 16: The life and work of Henry David Thoreau. Oct. 23 and 30: Introduction of influential people in the Transcendentalist Circle: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, Margaret Fuller and others.
