COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR THE WORKPLACE • Eligible for Financial AidBegin the process of learning English with this basic course designed for students whose primary language is other than English and who have limited skills in their first language. Course content concentrates on pronunciation, learning the English alphabet, numbers, every day activities and work skills. Instruction emphasizes essential listening, speaking, reading, writing, and computational skills required by business and industry. Students have the opportunity to improve communication skills as well as study skills to enhance job performance. Textbooks: Foundations, Foundations Activity Workbook.
COMMUNICATIONS IMPROVEMENT ONE • Eligible for Financial AidFocused for students whose primary language is other than English, this course concentrates on industry-related basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. High-frequency vocabulary, basic sight words and phonics are emphasized. Students are expected to have basic speaking, reading, and writing skills. The course will lead to a vocabulary of 600 words focusing primarily on present and future tenses. The 12 lab hours can be arranged at the student’s convenience. COMMUNICATIONS IMPROVEMENT TWO • Eligible for Financial AidFor those who can speak, read and write basic English, this course can help prepare students for employment opportunities. Conversation, listening, reading and writing skills are further developed to provide the student with a functional vocabulary range of 1,200 words, focusing on the present, future and past tenses. It provides dynamic practice for students whose primary language is other than English, exposing students to the uses of language in a variety of job-related contexts. COMMUNICATIONS IMPROVEMENT THREE • Eligible for Financial AidThis course provides an introductory-level, comprehensive grammar review of present, future and past tenses and introduces the perfect tenses while developing a 2,000 word vocabulary. Students will focus on improving reading vocabulary and comprehension skills, as well as speaking, writing and listening skills for job success. COMMUNICATIONS IMPROVEMENT FOUR • Eligible for Financial AidProvides an intermediate-level review of English, this course uses conversational methods to review verb tenses and practice advanced vocabulary. Instruction emphasizes development and skills acquisition of industry-related vocabulary. Students will work to determine meaning from context and identify word forms and variations in meaning. Instruction focuses on communication situations found in business and the workplace for students whose primary language is other than English. The course emphasizes internal communication with employees and external communication with customers, clients and suppliers. Instruction covers problem-solving and decision-making communications, both written and oral; intercultural and international communication; and business etiquette. TOEFL is a college and university entrance test frequently required for foreign-born students. The course is designed for intermediate and advanced students. It presents efficient and specific techniques for dealing with format, procedures, content and test conditions of the TOEFL.
