Effective summer 2005, DCCCD core courses have college-level prerequisites in reading, writing or math.

The Brookhaven College core of 48 credit hours is composed of the following courses.

COMMUNICATIONS: nine credit hours

  • English 1301 (A grade of C or better must be earned)
  • English 1302
  • *Speech 1311, 1315, or any Foreign Language Course 1311 or higher, or American Sign Language course

*Students must select Speech 1311 if seeking an A.A. or A.S. degree; Students must also earn a grade of C or better if they select SPEECH 1311 or 1315.

MATHEMATICS: three credit hours (Select one course)

  • Math 1314, 1324, 1332, 1333, 1348, 1414, 2342, 2412, 2442, or higher level.

(A grade of C or better must be earned in the selected college-level math courses.)

LAB SCIENCES: eight credit hours (Select two courses)

  • Biology 1406, 1407, 1408, 1409,
  • Chemistry 1405, 1407, 1411, 1412,
  • Geology 1401, 1403, 1404, 1445,
  • Physics 1401, 1402, 1405, 1407, 1411, 1412, 1415, 1417, 2425, 2426

Students MAY NOT use the following combinations to meet this requirement:

  • Biology 1406 and 1408;
  • Chemistry 1405 and 1411;
  • Physics 1401 and 1405; Physics 1401 and 2425; or Physics 1405 and 2425.

SOCIAL/BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES: 15 credit hours

  • History 1301, 1302
  • Government 2301, 2302

Select one course from the following

  • Anthropology 2346, 2351,
  • Economics 1303, 2301, 2302, 2311,
  • Psychology 2301, 2314, 2316,
  • Sociology 1301, 1306, 2319

HUMANITIES/VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS: nine credit hours (Select one course from each of the three groupings)

  • Category I: Arts 1301, 1303, 1304, Dance 2303, Drama 1310, 2366, Humanities 1315, Music 1306, 1308, 1309
  • Category II: English 2321, 2322, 2323, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2331, 2332, 2333
  • Category III: Cultural Studies 2370, History 2321, 2322, 2380, 2381, Philosophy 1301, 2306, 2307, 2316, 2317, Religion 1304

OTHER: four credit hours

  • Physical Ed. 1164 and Computer Science 1300 or higher level COSC course.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ASSOCIATE IN ARTS DEGREE

  • Electives - 13 credit hours

Electives may not include courses with the following prefixes: BCIS, BIOL, CHEM, COSC, ENGR, GEOL, MATH or PHYS. If electives include these courses, students may prefer the Associate in Science degree. Students should choose courses that fit into their transfer major. Please see an academic advisor for assistance in selecting elective courses.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE

  • Electives 13 credit hours
  • At least 3-4 credit hours must be selected from the following prefixes: BCIS, BIOL, CHEM, COSC, ENGR, GEOL, MATH or PHYS.

Remaining 9-10 credit hours may be selected from any other college-level courses. Students should choose courses that fit into their transfer major. Please see an academic advisor for assistance in selecting elective courses.

NOTES: Students may earn EITHER an Associate in Arts OR an Associate in Science degree, BUT NOT BOTH. Only three one-hour PHED activity courses may be used as electives. The GPA for graduation is based on the credit earned for all DCCCD college-level work and for all credit that is transferred from other institutions. Students must earn at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction (not credit by examination) by the college granting the degree. No more than 25 percent of the credit hours required for graduation may be earned by credit for experiential learning. The following courses will not count toward graduation or the GPA for graduation: Courses numbered below 1000, Arts 1170, Music 1175 and Drama 1170.
